Why Join? The concrete canoe project not only helps students with technical and soft skills, but it also serves as a platform for students to develop lasting friendship and professional networks. At UCLA, the concrete canoe project is broken into various aspects allowing students to get involved in a way that is best tailored to their interests and skills. Some of the aspects of the project include: mix design, structural analysis, hull design, theme/art development, construction, and paddling. This allows students to do everything from chemistry to racing. This is one of the only projects that has an athletic component.
In addition, there is a need for student that are passionate about concrete chemistry, fluid/flow analysis, structural analysis, and design/media arts. From management to engineering, there is a place on the UCLA Concrete Canoe Team for both engineers and non-engineers alike.
How to get involved
There are several components which the entire concrete canoe project consists of. Students (or as we like to call them, "Project Engineers") can get involved in one or all of the different components. It takes an entire team of dedicated members to complete this project, and we encourage students from all backgrounds and skill sets to contribute.
Hull DesignHull Design aims to model a canoe that is competitive in the water. Reducing drag and increasing paddler ergonomics are just some of the goals in a good hull design.
STrUCTURAL ANALYSISOur canoes would be useless if they broke. Therefore, we use careful analysis to ensure that our canoes will be able to withstand the forces exerted during races and display.
Mix DesignThe mix design team aims to create mixes that are lighter, stronger, and more sustainable. Each year the goal for the mix design may vary depending on rules and project team.
CONSTruction
Construction of the canoe and mold is essential to the project. A final display, stands, and cutaway are also required to compete. This team has a crucial job that is continuous year round.
Media, Design & ArtA dedicated design time is necessary to render all images for presentation, design report, and media. Additionally, there is a need for creative, artistic students to help with the final product.
PaddlingUCLA paddlers need to be dedicated. Traditionally we paddle twice a week and maintain weekly workout sessions throughout the school year. Time trials and technique are used to determine the competition team and alternates.
